Welcome to Elkin City Schools!
With more than twenty-nine years in education, Dr. Myra S. Cox’s educational philosophy is to provide every student equal access to a high quality education and to provide teachers and other staff the tools they need to prepare students to be good stewards and citizens of the society they will inevitably inherit. She is committed to motivating all students, teaching all students, and inspiring all students to learn more and do more to make the world a better place.
Dr. Myra S. Cox has been proudly serving the Elkin City School system as superintendent since December 2016. Prior to that appointment, she served as the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for the Yadkin County Schools beginning in 2014. She also held the positions of Chief Academic Officer and Director of K-8 Education and Title I Programming for the Yadkin County Schools beginning in 2011. In addition, Dr. Cox served as a primary grades teacher in Stokes County, a curriculum specialist in Surry County, a school level administrator in Surry and Stokes Counties, and a district administrator in both Stokes and Yadkin Counties.
Dr. Myra S. Cox graduated from Surry Central High School and received an associate's degree from Surry Community College and her undergraduate degree from Winston-Salem State University. She earned her master’s degree from Appalachian State University and graduated from High Point University with a doctorate in Educational Leadership.
With a distinguished record of involvement in educational and civic organizations, Dr. Cox is an active member of the North Carolina Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (NCASCD), the North Carolina Association of School Administrators (NCASA), as well as the North Carolina School Superintendents Association (NCSSA). She serves on the Board of Directors as President for the Yadkin Valley United Fund, the Board of Directors for the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Trustees for Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, the chairman for the Public School Partnership at Appalachian State University, the Vice-President of the Northwest Regional Educational Service Alliance and is a member of the Surry County Cooperative Extension Advisory Council as well as the Surry County Opioid Response Advisory Council. Most recently, Cox joined a cohort of Global Education Leaders through UNC World View comprised of K-12 superintendents and community college presidents.
In addition, Dr. Cox is actively involved in the community and served two-year terms as both the first vice-president and president of the Delta Kappa Gamma International’s Alpha Theta chapter. Now residing in Elkin, she is a member of the local Gamma Psi chapter, where she serves as secretary, the Yadkin Valley Rotary Club and is a member of Explore Elkin.
Honors include selection as a UNC World View Educator Spotlight Recipient, Paul Harris Fellow, Executive Coaching Honoree, and Aspiring Superintendent Fellow. She maintained a 4.0 Grade Point Average in her doctoral studies, has written and received multiple grants for Elkin City Schools. Dr. Cox is a published author and often presents research-based strategies to district, local, state, and national audiences regarding effective instruction and best practices.
Dr. Cox enjoys singing and traveling. She and her husband, Denny, live in Elkin and are members of Elkin Valley Baptist Church.
