Nature of Work
Under limited supervision, performs a variety of professional work to assist in the coordination of activities of the Exceptional Children’s Department. Work involves function as a consultant to schools and ensuring the implementation of required policies and procedures affecting students with disabilities. Employee is responsible for reviewing required EC forms and paperwork to help determine eligibility and placement of students with disabilities. Work is guided by and must be in compliance with federal and state statutes and regulations. Employees must exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative in the performance of assignments.
Minimum Training and Experience
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Ability to work effectively with school-aged children from diverse backgrounds
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Training and Experience
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education
- Prior experience working in K-12 public schools
- Familiarity with WIDA standards and English Learner support strategies
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide academic tutoring and language development support to multilingual students in English and/or their native language when appropriate.
- Assist students in mastering content across core subjects (e.g., math, reading, science, social studies).
- Support students’ development of English language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Implement instructional strategies and accommodations based on students’ English Language Proficiency (ELP) levels.
- Collaborate with ESL teachers and classroom teachers to align support with grade-level curriculum and language goals.
- Monitor and document student progress and communicate with teachers and families as needed.
- Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that respects cultural and linguistic diversity.
- Participate in professional development related to English Language Development (ELD), cultural competency, and NC DPI policies.
Work Environment
- May work in classrooms, ESL resource rooms, or one-on-one settings
- May require travel between schools if serving multiple sites
